Sun on Sunday to launch this week

The Sun on Sunday will be launched this week, News International has revealed following speculation that a replacement for News of the World would appear soon.

Today’s edition of the Sun (February 20th) broke the news, which has taken the newspaper industry off-guard.

Sun editor Dominic Mohan said: “This is a truly historic moment in newspaper publishing and I am proud to be part of it.”

It follows the closure of the News of the World last year as advertisers abandoned the newspaper in light of the still ongoing phone hacking scandal.

There have as yet been no details about the cover price of the paper or which brands will fill the advertising space.

News International bosses will be hoping to recapture the market share enjoyed by News of the World, which took in around £37 million in ad revenue and sold 2.66 million copies per week.

The Sunday national newspaper ad market has slipped over 17 per cent in revenue generated in the last 12 months, with the closure of the News of the World contributing significantly to this decline.

One media buyer told the Guardian: “There will be a degree of support, advertisers are not adverse to the return of a News International title per se, but the market is stressed.”
