McConnells Lays On The VIP Treatment For Homeless Billy
After answering an urgent social media appeal we rolled out the red carpet for a special, if unusual, visitor - a Corgi-Jack Russell cross called Billy.

Birmingham-based Water Orton Wonderdogs (WOW) Rescue Centre had posted the plea for help on social networking site ‘Dog Rescue Pages’ which aims to find homes for dogs in need.
When Billy arrived at WOW Rescue Centre, he’d been placed in a foster home while a permanent home was sought, but didn’t get on with the fosterer’s own dog. Like rescue centres across the UK, WOW has seen an increase in the numbers of animals seeking adoption as a result of the recession. This meant that all its usual foster places were taken, so the shelter posted the appeal on Dog Rescue Pages. Unfortunately, no volunteers came forward and as the situation was getting desperate for Billy, Ella Cheeseman, director of McConnells volunteered.
Since joining McConnells, Billy has had his every whim tended to by graphic designer Sarah Chapman. “You can’t help but love Billy,” explained Sarah, “he’s so friendly and obedient; sleeping under my desk during the day and enjoying walks to the post office at lunch. We’ve really enjoyed having him around and have treated him in the style that his Royal cousins are very much accustomed to.”
“The good news is that after asking around our friends and families Billy has now found a new home. WOW Rescue Centre has conducted full home assessments and Billy has left the world of advertising to enjoy a proper dog’s life,” added Ella.
Kate Higgins, co-founder of WOW, added: “Although we are based in Birmingham, we are happy to place dogs anywhere in the country if we feel the home is right; when Billy came to us we had to find an urgent foster home for him and are so grateful for Ella’s and McConnells offer of help. This has been brilliant for Billy and we are delighted that he has now found his loving ‘forever home’.”
After fostering Billy, we issued a press release about his dash to Derby appealing for volunteers, fosterers and new homes on behalf of WOW Rescue Centre. This was printed in both the Birmingham Evening News and the Derby Evening Telegraph. As a result, WOW has found new homes for four other dogs and has a number of new fosterers on its books.
Water Orton Wonderdogs (WOW) Rescue Centre (WOW) are always looking for new members, volunteers and foster homes - for further information email wowrescue@live.co.uk.
Dog Rescue Pages aims to encourage more people to consider adopting one of the many thousands of dogs waiting for new homes throughout the UK and Ireland. For further information, to adopt a dog or offer a foster home, visit www.dogpages.org.uk.
